Description

This paper examines public relations of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly and the information awareness of assemblymen. Since the 90s, the assembly has adapted to new media surroundings and has also introduced new Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs). According to the results of my research, while assemblymen subscribe to a few dailies and tend to watch the popular news programs, they feel there are some problems in them. They regarded the Internet as an important source of political information and consider new ICTs will affect political activities. However, the requests from electorates were the most influential factor to establish individual homepage, the time of their PC use is short and their E-mail dispatch is infrequent, which suggests their passive attitudes. Thus these findings provide that the possibility of the politics/policy through new media can deepen the relation with the political process and elections in urban politics as well as Tokyo.
