Abstract

The invasion of Eragrostis curvula, an invasive perennial grass, into gravelly floodplain habitats resulted in a decrease of population of Aster kantoensis, an endangered perennial herb, in the Kinu River. In order to conserve and restore A. kantoensis, E. curvula was removed and A. kantoensis was reintroduced by seed sowing in a restoration project. We examined the effectiveness of E. curvula removal by citizen participants, which were conducted more than 4 years after the restoration, and its removal efforts at the restoration site. The area of E. curvula removal during 4 years was about 6,800m^2 (47% of the site area). The removal resulted in a significant low value of one fifth in cover of E. curvula and significant high values of 2.4 times in cover of floodplain endemic species and A. kantoensis. These results suggest the effectiveness of E. curvula removal by citizen participants for restoration of floodplain endemic species including A. kantoensis. The removal activities of E. curvula were conducted by a total of 319 citizen participants for 9 days (with 12.5 hours) during 4 years. Average working hours and number of participants per day were 1.4 hours and 35 persons, respectively. The calculated area of removal per person-hour was 16.1m^2.
