Degradation of fenpropathrin [(RS)-α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl 2, 2, 3, 3-tetramethylcyclopropanecarboxylate] in two soils was studied under laboratory conditions with 14C preparations labeled separately in the cyclopropyl and benzyl ring. Its half-life of disappearance was 11 to 17 days in aerobic upland soils. The insecticide degraded via pathways including cleavage of the ester or diphenyl ether bond, hydroxylation of the 4-position of the phenoxy ring, and hydrolysis of the cyano group to amide and carboxy groups. The main degradation route was hydrolysis of the ester linkage. The resultant products further degraded to 14CO2 and bound residues. After 24 weeks, the amount of 14CO2 evolved was 37.5-54.6% of the applied 14C. When bound 14C residues from radiolabeled fenpropathrin were mixed with fresh soil, 5-22% of the bound 14C was mineralized to 14CO2 during an 8-week period. Fenpropathrin degraded very slowly under anaerobic upland conditions and hardly in sterilized soils. Its degradation seemed to be mainly mediated by aerobic microorganisms in soil. Although a trace amount of fenpropathrin appeared in an effluent from sand containing organic matter by less than 0.1%, there was no leaching of fenpropathrin with water through other three types of soil columns when percolation was started immediately after treatment or after treated soil was aged for 4 weeks.
