Description
Ultrastructure of the chloroplasts of Chinese cabbages which showed chlorosis with foliar treatment of 1, 000ppm phosalone, was observed by an electron microscope. The chloroplasts in young leaves developed after the treatment and inhibited to greening, were globular rather than normal discoidal shape. Grana formation was inhibited, and the fret system disarranged. In matured leaves, fine structure of the chloroplasts was changed at 24hr after the treatment, when no visible symptom was appeared. The thylakoids became swollen, and vesicles were formed in stroma. When the chlorosis appeared at 48hr after the treatment, degradation of chloroplasts such as disorganization of the fret system, vesiculation of the fret membranes and rugged envelope of chloroplasts were observed. Osmiophilic globules increased, and starch grains almost disappeared. The changes induced by phosalone on chloroplast ultrastructure were similar to those caused by some herbicides. It was suggested that the appearance of visual symptoms of phytotoxicity by phosalone result from inhibition of chloroplast development or disruptive changes in chloroplast ultrastructure.
