Photodegradation of the organophosphorous fungicide tolclofos-methyl [Rizolex®, O, O-dimethyl O-(2, 6-dichloro-4-methylphenyl)phosphorothioate] radiolabeled at the phenyl ring has been studied. On exposure to natural sunlight, the fungicide was photodegraded with half-lives of 44 days in distilled water, 15-28 days in natural river and pond water, and less than 2 days in 2% aqueous acetone. The quantum yield was determined to be 1.6×10-1 (at 313nm in water), and the half-life of disappearance at 40 degree North Latitude was calculated to be 40±5 days in spring. Toiclofos-methyl applied on soil thin layer plates was promptly dissipated from four kinds of soil through photodegradation and volatilization, with a half-life of less than 2 days. The fungicide underwent photoisomerization, oxidation at the 4-methyl group or oxidation from the P=S to the P=O group, and cleavage of the P-O-aryl or P-O-methyl linkage in water and on soil surface. Photomineralization of the radiocarbon was also observed in 2% aqueous acetone. Evaporation was found to be also a significant factor for dissipation of tolclofos-methyl from a water body.
