Polycrystalline Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 with average grain size of 15 to 50μm and density of 99% were deformed under a constant compressive load (160 to 500kg/cm2) and at a constant temperature (1200° to 1400°C). The value of γ, which is the ratio of the strain contributed by grain boundary sliding (εgbs) to the total strain (εt) of the polycrystalline Ni-Zn ferrite, was determined by the marker line method.<br>Under the deformation condition of 1250°C and 170kg/cm2, the value of εt and εgbs of polycrystalline Ni-Zn ferrite with the grain size of 21μm increased with time, but the ratio εgbst=γ did not change with time. This result shows that the value of γ is constant with time, namely with εt, under a constant load and temperature. The value of γ decreased with increasing grain size for all experimental conditions used. The specimens having small pores at the triple points of the grain contact showed a little higher value of γ than the denser specimens, probably because of easiness of grain boundary sliding by the existence of the pores. At the same grain size and the same temperature, smaller compressive load resulted in smaller value of γ than larger compressive load, although smaller compressive load, namely slower deformation, has been expected to result in larger value of γ. This result may have come from the fact that the grain boundary corrugated and the flatness of the boundary surface was lost during the slower deformation. In the specimens with the grain size larger than 50μm, much higher temperature and much larger load were necessary to deformation. The larger load increased the possibility of the crack at the grain boundary, and higher temperature increased the dislocation movement in the interior of the grain, the migration and the corrugation of the grain boundary. Because of these effects, the measurement of the value of γ of the material with grain size larger than 50μm was very difficult.
