Abstract

This investigation was conducted to study the effects of composition and alumina additions on the firing process, physical properties and crystalline constituents of bodies in bone china. The firing process of bodies was investigated by conventional microscopical method. Bulk specific gravity, modulus of elasticity, transverse strength, expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, electrical properties and crystalline constituents were evaluated at various firing temperature.<br>When alumina was added to bone china body, a part of alumina composed AlPO4 with P2O5 component in body and some dissolved into melt, besides some crystalline phase of corundum was always found. AlPO4 was composed by solid state reaction and recrystallization from melt. With increasing temperature, the producing rate of glassy matrix phase in the siliceous body was much faster than in the aluminous body. An increasing of alumina content in bone china body resulted in increased thermal conductivity and transverse strength and in decreased expansion coefficient. Consequently, the strength of thermal shock damage resistance of bone china body was found to increase when quartz was replaced with alumina in bone china body composition.
