Description

Potassium dititanate (K2Ti2O5) fibers were grown by the melt method. A mixture of stoichiometric composition consisting of K2CO3 and TiO2 was melted at 1100°C for 30min, and the melt was rapidly crystallized in a fibrous aggregation by pouring into another metallic crucible cooling with water on the bottom. The fiber separation was carried out by immersing the crystallized mass in to water. This hydration reaction occurredt of orm a hydrous phase, KHTi2O5, accompaning with the extraction of potassium ions. The hydrous phase was transformed to potassium tetratitanate fibers after heat-treatment at 900°C or above. Also, the potassium dititanate fibers were varied to potassium hexatitanate fibers by calcining at 900°C or above, after treatment in hot or boiling water, and to crystalline hydrous titanium dioxide (TiO2nH2O) fibers by treatment in dilute acid solution.
