A glass having the composition of K2O⋅SiO2 was prepared and its X-ray data were taken by using Mo Kα radiation monochromatized with a graphite monochromator and balanced filters. The radial distribution function (RDF) was then calculated from these data. Many structure theories, including random network theory, chain structures, ring structures, had been proposed for alkali metasilicate glasses. RDFs calculated by means of the pair-function method for models with chain structures showed good similarity to the obsereved RDF. Parameters for the chain structure were changed widely and many RDPs were calculated. Among them, a model having the bend angle of 9°, Si-O distances ranging between 1.60-1.68Å and K-O distances between 2.75-2.82Å gave the best result. Crystal structures of alkali metasilicates are also chain like ones, and this chain structure seemed very likely to be the structure of K2O⋅SiO2 glass. Ring structures were also examined, but no reasonable models were obtained. The disorder based on statistical distribution and the structural characteristics was found to improve the agreement of the calculated RDF with the observed RDE. The disorder was concluded to be a very important parameter for the structures of glasses.
