Abstract
Theoretically dense magnesium aluminum spinel ceramics with various MgO to Al2O3 ratio were prepared by hot-pressing with the same sintering condition, and effect of the compositional ratio on microstructure and mechanical strength of the spinel were examined. Results obtained were summarized as follows:
(1) Excess amount of MgO in the specimen inhibited slightly grain growth of spinel, but excess Al2O3 showed no significant effect on it.
(2) The bending strength of the specimen was increased by annealing in the temperature range from 900° to 1150°C.
(3) Among the sintered specimens which have nearly the theoretical density and the similar gram size, their bending strength and KIC-factor increased with the increase of Al2O3-content in the specimen. It was inferred that excess amount of MgO in the specimen resulted in the formation of non-uniform microstructure, which might increase flaw size in the specimen and consequently reduced the mechanical strength. In contrast, Al2O3-rich spinel ceramics showed higher strength, owing to the precipitation of very fine dispersed phase (Guinier-Preston Zone) during annealing process which was considered to reduce the flaw size and/or to inhibit crack propagation.
(4) In the case of the sintered specimens which have nearly theoretical density and the similar grain size distribution, bending strength of 49kg/mm2 and 67kg/mm2 were observed for equimolar and Al2O3-rich spinel specimens, respectively.
