Abstract
It was found that the alkyl silicates such as tetra n-butyl silicate and ethyl silicate work effectively as a grinding aid and a classifiyng aid for the dry refinement of the clayey Roseki. Usually, it is difficult to refine clay raw materials into a high grade substance, since the clay particles with water cause the agglomeration and the adhesion in the refining processes. The alkyl silicate reacts with the free water in the clay raw materials, resulting in forming the alcohol and decreasing the influences by the water. Also the substances partially hydrolyzed alkyl silicate are chemisorbed on the surface of the clay particles, resulting in giving rise to the water-repellent property to the clay particles.
By the addition of the alkyl silicate into the raw feed for grinding, its grinding by the ball mill and its dry classifying were made possible. The amount of the fine particles obtained by classifying was increased and the refined state of them was improved when a purverizer with high grinding ability was used. In the refined product, pyrophyllite with a small amount of diaspore was concentrated by the large amount of removement of quartz during the process of classifying.
The added amount of the alkyl silicate must be of the suitable quantity to the total surface area of particles formed by grinding, since the deficiency or the excess of the additive causes the re-agglomeration of particles, resulting in lowering the quality of the fine particles refined. The effect of grinding aid of the alkyl silicate weakens when its rate of hydrolysis is too high. So that tetra n-butyl silicate is better than ethyl silicate for use for the grinding aid because the rate of hydrolysis for ethyl silicate is rather high.
