The transportation phenomena of Cl- ion in hardened portland cement paste were described. The reaction of the hydrated cements or cement minerals with NaCl solution was studied and the distribution of Cl- ion concentration in hardened cement paste immersed in artificial sea water was measured. The diffusion of Cl- ion in hardened cement paste was discussed and the following results were obtained.<br>It was found that C3AH6 reacted considerably with NaCl solution but even if the concentration of solution was high as 20wt% the conversion was not complete. It was also found that the hydrates of C4AF reacted with NaCl solution but the amount of reacted Cl- ion was about half of C3AH6. The amount of reacted Cl- ion with C3S hydrates was very little. In the case of hydrated cement the amount of reacted Cl- ion could be calculated additively from the composition of cement.<br>The distribution of Cl- ion concentration in hardened cement paste agreed with calculation obtained from Fick's law, and an apparent diffusion coefficient of 3.8×10-8cm2⋅s-1 was obtained, An apparent diffusion coefficient of 3.4×10-8cm2⋅s-1 was calculated from the penetration depth of Cl- ion which was measured by means of colorimetry with fluorescein sodium salt and silver nitrate. In consideration of the reaction of Cl- ion with hydrate, diffusion coefficient was calculated as 2.3×10-7cm2⋅s-1. It was suggested that the value obtained in this way should better represent the real process. The diffusion of Cl- ion was faster when the cement was immersed in MgCl2 solution than in NaCl solution. It was made sure that the diffusion of Cl- ion in hardened cement paste was affected by the accompanying cation species.
