The moisture absorption of potassium tetratitanate (K2Ti4O9) fibers and change processes from potassium tetratitanate fibers to potassium hexatitanate (K2Ti6O13) fibers and through hydrated titania (TiO2⋅nH2O) fibers to anatase fibers are investigated.<br>The moisture absorption of K2Ti4O9 fibers under normal atmospheric conditions was divided into two kinds; one increased up to 4.8wt% for 900h, and the other increased up to only 0.8wt% for 900h, although they scarcely increased till 100h.<br>The order of decreasing extractability of potassium from the K2Ti4O9 fibers in various acid solutions was as follows: HCl>HNO3≈H2SO4>(COOH)2>HCOOH>CH3COOH. It was found that an HCl solution is good for extracting all potassium ions, and a CH3COOH solutionis suitable for extracting partial potassium ions in the K2Ti4O9 fibers, and the quantity of extraction can be controlled by the reaction time and the concentration of acid solutions.<br>By heating after the potassium extraction, the K2Ti4O9 fibers were changed into various fibers such as K2Ti6O13, hydrated titania, or anatase. However, the anatase fibers were obtained from the hydrated titania phase through an intermediate phase.<br>The thermal analysis of the hydrated titania fibers, was characterized by four endothermic reactions at about 100°, 200°, 350° and 550°C accompanying with the dehydration, and by three exothermic reactions at about 380°, 800° and 1000°C related to the phase changes into the intermediate phase, anatase and rutile, respectively.
