Description
Various experiences in daily life influence consumers’ awareness of odors in their environments.According to Gotow et al.(2010),the participants in their study could be classified into “neophobic” and “neophilic” groups with different templates in city gas odor category. In this study, using the classification in our participants,we examined whether repeated presentation to the odors of their original city gas,as well as novel odors, alter their templates for city gas odor category.<BR>Participants were allocated between three groups:two repeated presentation groups and one non-repeated presentation (the control). Each group was assigned a different set of sequential tasks.Participants in the repeat-presentation groups performed goodness-of-fit evaluation that estimated how well participants accepted a given stimulus as “city gas odor”,after repeated presentation to them for once a month for a total of three months; the two groups were subjected to different experimental schedules.Participants in the control group were instructed to do the same task as the repeat-presentation groups, but without the repeated odor presentation over the three-month period.Cluster analysis revealed that the number of participants classified as “neophobic” or “neophilic” among the three groups might be a function of the schedule for repeated odor presentation. These results showed that part of “neophobic” group would metamorphose into “neophilic” one, which implied new template was utilized in goodness-of-fit evaluation for odor category after repeated odor presentation.
