This paper proposed an optimization approach for supporting the design of both railway line and railway vertical alignment. First the digital geographic model was developed, then the approach was developed based on the digital model. The proposed approach can be used to optimize the railway line and the railway vertical alignment simultaneously. In the approach, the treatment of the formulation of optimization and the constraints condition were simplified by using the random searching method. Further, by combining the model for the optimization of the railway vertical alignment based on the B-spline functions, that was previously proposed, the computation time problem of the random searching method was overcome. Moreover, the applicability of the approach was tested by comparing with the example that is really existing in China.
