Abstract

The present study examined the usability of input devices of computer for infants at the beginning of the computer use. Subjects were 21 of three-year old kindergartners, and they were required to copy circles on computer display by using a mouse and a pen tablet, and drawing in the paper by using a crayon as well. Compared with using a crayon, subjects faced the difficulty in completing the task with using a mouse and a pen tablet. Moreover, there seemed different characteristics between these two input devices. The time required for accomplish the task with both a mouse and a pen tablet took longer time than that with a crayon. These results suggest that some points should be considered and taken care of until infants adequately get the skill at early phase of computer use.
