Abstract

Forest education in Japan includes a wide variety of activities, but it has not been classified yet. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of forest education, its contents were classified and sorted based on literatures surveys and investigations of actual conditions. Our results showed that forest education can be classified into 4 elements, each of which can be divides into 2 sub elements, as follows: 1) Forest resources: (a) use of forest products (e.g. woodworking), (b) forest management (e.g. forestry operations), 2) Natural environment: (c) forest environment (e.g. learning about forest functions), (d) forest ecosystems (e.g. nature observation), 3) Nature experiences: (e) recreation (e.g. outing, forest therapy), (f) outdoor activities (e.g. exercise, artistic activities), and 4) Regional culture: (g) natural features, (h) providing livelihoods in rural areas. Our investigation of actual conditions revealed a wide variety of activities in forest education, and these activities could be successfully classified into the above mentioned elements. Still, it was difficult to separate these elements distinctly, because it seemed that they were related to each other. This is probably because forests have multiple functions by nature, which people expect as well. The results of our study suggest that clarifying the purposes of and establishing methods for conducting practical forestry education will important themes of future studies.
