Description
Visible wilting is a typical indicator of water stress in tomato plant. In our previous study, we reported that continuous monitoring of projected area of a tomato plant allows us to detect water stress in the plant. For a precise irrigation control for production of high sugar content tomato fruits, automated and early diagnosis of water stress is required. In this study, we developed an image processing program to automate the computing process to calculate a projected area from a digital color image of tomato plant and examined the accuracy of this program under greenhouse condition. The examination verified the image processing program calculated the projected area of tomato plant with high accuracy. By using this program, appropriate imaging angle to detect early symptoms of water stress was investigated. As a result, we proved that projected areas derived from digital color images captured at higher angles from 60° to 90° are the most effective to detect early symptoms of water stress in tomato plant.
