Abstract

Various native plants of Allium victorialis L. subsp. platyphyllum Hulten were collected from 31 habitats around Hokkaido and northern districts of Japan and propagated vegetatively in the fields at Sapporo. Variation in sprouting times of each clone was investigated during 2005-2007. Very early sprouting clones and a very late one were newly found. This early sprouting time of each clone was reproduced also in forcing culture as well as field in 2005 and 2006. Early-sprouting clones were superior to other clones in plant height and sprouting rate, suggesting that the cause was the different level of dormancy and the dormancy breaking between clones. Thus, the extent of chilling exposure and the dormant introduction period might affect the difference in sprouting time. From these results, the expansion of harvest period and the efficient cultivation system seem feasible by utilizing several clones with a different sprout period in winter forcing culture. Moreover, the indiscriminate overexploitation in the habitat could be prevented if an adequate commercial cultivation system was established.
