Abstract

Effects of paclobutrazol and ethephon (2-chloroethyl-1-phosphonic acid) on flowering, plant height and flower numbers in Salvia coccinea Juss. Ex Murray ‘Coral Nimph’ were investigated. Spraying paclobutrazol and ethephon just before flower budding reduced plant height 3 weeks later compared to that of the control. However, these same treatments increased 7th true leaf length, width and green color depth compared to those after other treatment regimens. Spraying Paclobutrazol increased 7th true leaf width. Spraying of both substances delayed first flowering day and decreased spike length compared to the control. Spraying at 500 mg l-1 and 1000 mg l-1 ethephon increased flower numbers and flower numbers/spike length.<BR>Based on these findings, spraying at 500 mg l-1 and 1000 mg l-1 ethephon just before flower budding caused the greatest decrease in stem length and increase in flower numbers.
