Abstract
Objective: Carotid artery ultrasonography is useful in the diagnosis of arteriosclerosis and screening for the disease. The objective of this study was to investigate an association between intima media thickness (IMT) and lifestyle and risk factors for arteriosclerosis in 45 year-old males.
Methods: The IMT was evaluated for the right and left carotid artery using measurement software which recorded mean-IMT (average IMT) and IMT-Cmax, the maximum value in the measurement range, as well as max-IMT, the maximum thickness in the examination range.
Results: IMT was significantly thicker when visceral fat area, BMI, glucose tolerance, LDL-C, LDL/HDL, metabolic syndrome score (5 points are added for abdominal circumference of 85 cm or over or visceral fat area of 100cm2 or over, 1 point added for abnormal blood pressure, blood glucose and neutral fat.) were abnormal. Also, in the heavy smoking group, mean-IMT for both sides was significantly thicker for a smoking index of 600 or greater. Furthermore, left mean-IMT was significantly greater for hypertension, high neutral fat and low HDL-C. There was tendency for IMT to be reduced by alcohol consumption.
Conclusions: The present study revealed factors involved in increasing IMT. Further investigation of the causes of increases in IMT is now needed through follow-up surveys of 5 years and 10 years in length.
