Abstract

The Georgia State Government, which has been working for economic development, started implementing a readiness test, Georgia Work Ready, in 2006. The readiness test uses ACT, Inc.'s Work Keys. This article examines how implementing the readiness test improved workforce quality in Georgia. The article first describes economic development in Georgia, the State Workforce Investment Board, employment assistance offered by One-stop Career Centers, public job training programs and additional information. Then, the article describes the actual operation of Georgia Work Ready, and examines the effects of the readiness test by looking at case examples of companies and their workforces. Positive effects, including reduced employment costs, increased employee retention rates and more employee promotions, were observed.
