Description
Optical monitoring system of chlorophyll a (Chl. a) content in phyllode was used to quantify the colour change of a phyllode in mother fern cultivation of asparagus in Kagawa prefecture. Changes in phyllode colour represented Chl. a derived from reflectance at wavelengths 590 nm, 620 nm, and 680 nm. This technique will be useful to determine the cutting time of mother fern to achieve stable yields, because the monitoring of Chl. a content will enable estimation of nutrient content in soil. Higher spear yield, especially in spring, was obtained when the mother fern was cut in mid-March, which is the period when Chl. a is absent in the phyllode, compared with that cut in January.
