Abstract
A range of glasses was prepared by melting elementary As and S in definite proportions in a sealed vacuum tube. The molecular volume and the molecular refraction were calculated from the density and refractive index of these glasses. Micro-hardness viscosity, and the solubility of these glasses in CS2 were also measured. The structure of glasses in the system As-S was studied by X-ray diffraction and a structural model was set up. From the measurements the following conclusions are made: 1. The structure of As2S3 glass is distorted form of the crystalline orpiment structure. 2. With increasing S content above As2S3, S is likely to exist in the chain-like form but when the S content is greater than that in As2S8-10, both chain-like and ring-type forms coexist. 3. The As-As bond must exist in the glasses which have lower content of S than that of As2S3.
