Abstract

Ground stiffness is relatively small and ground arch is insufficient in the shallow earth tunnels, therefore surface settlement during construction of such tunnel tends to be large. Side piles are thought to be one of countermeasures to control settlement when NATM tunnels are constructed in a soft ground with small earth covering. The authors performed basic studies to clear settlement reduction effect of side piles and its mechanism by model tests. As a result, the following knowledge are found; 1) side piles are effective to reduce settlement, 2) side piles become more effective under following conditions, they are installed to cross slip line, they are fixed to the tunnel tightly, and side piles have a certain amount of stiffness.
