Description

Groundwater contamination by organoarsenic compounds in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture was examined based on the findings of 3D numerical simulations. A primary contaminant was Diphenylarsinic acid. A small-scale numerical simulation evaluated transport processes of DPAA within the aquifer around a drinking water well where the contamination was first detected. The simulation results revealed that DPAA that leached from concrete-like blocks moved to the bottom of the aquifer due to density flow, and then was transported horizontally toward the drinking water well by groundwater flow. These results suggested that the blocks were the most probable source of the well contamination. Furthermore, a large-scale numerical simulation was carried out in order to evaluate transport processes of DPAA in the whole study area. As a result, it was suggested that groundwater extraction from industrial wells located downstream of the study area had limited the spread of the groundwater contamination until the operation stop of the some industrial wells.
