Abstract

A technical feasibility of a shallow land waste repository for very low level radioactive waste placed by a bottom sand drainage layer with a capillary barrier is discussed. As unsaturated hydraulic properties of the sand determine water divergence through the bottom sand drainage layer, it is required to study an effect of overburden pressure loaded by the shallow land on it. In the study, a soil-water characteristic curve and an air entry value of sand are measured by a soil-water retention test using a microporous membrane. The overburden pressures which will be mobilized in the shallow land waste repository, from 0 to 200 kPa, are loaded onto sand specimens. No or negligible change in the soil-water characteristic curve and the air entry value of the sand were found. This leads to a practical feasibility of constructing the shallow land waste repository placed by the bottom sand drainage layer.
