Description

An interspecific hybrid larva between Luehdorfia japonica and L. puziloi has been introduced. So far, no larva or pupa of puziloi ♀×japonica ♂ has been known. The authors have reared one larva of this parentage and observed its morphology and behavior. 1) The authors caught a female of L. puziloi with a black sphragis at Oami, Nagano Prefecture, on May 3rd, 1976. That black sphragis appeared to have been made by a male of L. japonica. 2) The female laid fifty eggs on Asiasarum Sieboldii and only one egg hatched. 3) The larva was first reared on Asiasarum Sieboldii and later on Heterotropa blumei. It pupated 34 days after hatching. 4) The larva had more pale brown spots than those of L. puziloi. In general appearance, the larva resembled FI larvae from japonica ♀×puziloi ♂ crosses. 5) The larva was less active than those of L. puziloi. 6) The larva pupated in the 5th instar but the pupa died without hatching. However, it was found that a complete adult body with fully colored wings had been formed.
