Description

Some twenty-five years ago Dr. I.W.B. NYE inaugurated a revisional work of the genus Prophantis WARREN, 1896, type-species: Botys octoguttalis FELDER & ROGENHOFER, 1875, shortly after having been appointed a science officer of the Department of Entomology at the British Museum (Natural History). Before completion of his study on that genus, however, and until his retirement in 1984, he had had to devote all his energies to the preparation of manuscripts of "The Generic Names of Moths of the World", a monumental work in the field of taxonomy of moths. Inevitably many new species of Prophantis are still left unpublished. This paper was prepared in order to validate one of his manuscript names under permission of Dr. NYE, with the great assistance of Mr. M. SHAFFER of the same Department. I am deeply grateful to Dr. NYE and Mr. SHAFFER for their kind offices. My thanks are also due to the following donors of the specimens recorded hereinafter : S. AZUMA, K. JINBO, A. KAWAZOE, Y.
