Abstract

The life-history of Aporia potanini insularis SHIROZU from Taiwan is newly described and figured. Notes on the habitat and adult habits are also given. The larval foodplant of this pierid is a hemi-liana, Elaeagnus Thunbergii SERV. (Elaeagnaceae). The early stages of this species are very similar to those of Aporia hippia from Japan, but are distinguishable from the latter by the following respects: 4th (last) instar larva yellowish brown with greenish tinge, marked with broader dorsal and narrower subdorsal lines; pupa more sparsely black dotted, slenderer as a whole, and having longer cephalic projection bending dorsally with its apex weakly bilobed. The habitat is found in evergreen broad-leaved forest containing the foodplant along mountain streams (1300-1600m alt.) in the central mountain area (Hualien Pref.) of Taiwan. The time of appearance seems to be from the middle to end of May on the surveyed areas.
