Butterfly assemblages were investigated through the transect method at three study sites in Yato (valleys in hill land) of Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture, central Japan, from April to November, 2003-2005. Three sites were environmentally different in their land use. Cessation of the farming field and subsequent vegetation succession influenced the butterfly assemblage, and the composition of species decreased. It is suggested that artificial management of environment is necessary for maintaining biodiversity of butterflies in Yato.
