Description

Food poisoning by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O111 and O157 occurred in three ' yakiniku' restaurants in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, in April 2011. Large quantities of red blood cells, platelet concentrates, and fresh-frozen plasma (FFP) were used for transfusion in patients with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. We investigated the consumption of blood products by blood group, transfusion outcomes, and the cooperation system between hospitals and blood centers in other prefectures by sending a questionnaire to hospitals in Toyama. The responses to the survey provided information on 36 inpatients and 15 outpatients. Among inpatients, there were 12 type O, 9 type B, 7 type A, and 3 type AB patients, indicating the predominance of blood group O. FFP was used in a large quantity for exchange transfusion, and 1,548 units were consumed in treating hemolytic uremic syndrome. The platelet count also increased after transfusion of platelet concentrates, and post-transfusion thrombosis was not reported. Many manufactured blood products were supplied immediately from other prefectures, suggesting that the cross-prefectural cooperation system of blood center was functioning at a sufficient level via the electronic mailing list system utilized by physicians.
