Description
In order to improve brittle properties of MoSi2 ceramics without degrading its excellent oxidation resistance, composites with Mo2B5 were examined.
(1) Full densification was achieved by firing at 1500°C with addition of 0 to 40wt% Mo2B5.
(2) A large amount of glassy silica phase was present in the microstructure, indicating extensive oxidation of MoSi2 raw powder. Some part of Mo2B5 decomposed into MoB by the solution precipitation mechanism through silica phase, and platelike MoB crystals were formed. The glassy phase contained a large amount of boron. The densification of the composites was achieved through the typical liquid phase sintering mechanism enhanced by the dissolution of boron.
(3) Composites with less than 30wt% Mo2B5 exhibited good oxidation resistance at 1700°C in air.
(4) The flexural strength and the fracture toughness were almost doubled to nearly 600MPa and 2.7MPa·m1/2, respectively, with 10 to 20wt% addition of Mo2B5.
