Description
This paper deals with the effects of oil through and mesh size on hole accuracy and tool life in through hole drilling of alumina ceramic using an electroplated diamond tool with two or three oil holes. The application of oil through reduces an adhesion of chips on the tool end face and consequently brings out smaller thrust force and longer tool life at low drilling speeds comparing with the conventional tool. However, the drilling of ceramic fails at a drilling speed of 25m/min or less, even if the oil through is applied. The larger mesh size brings out the smaller fracture size at the exit of hole, the smaller thrust force and the more scratched marks on the tool end face. Therefore, the mesh size of about #300 is suitable for the through hole drilling of around 1mm diameter. The hole diameter decreases gradually as the number of drilling increases. The entrance diameter of hole is lager than the exit one.
