This paper proposes a patch division milling that can generate a geometric pattern by a ball-end mill on a plane surface. The surface is divided into a lot of small patches of the same size such as triangle, quadrilateral, or hexagon. Each patch is machined by high feed speed along a helical tool path. The surface texture is generated by the cutting edge of the ball-end mill within a patch area, and then the machined surface is covered with many patches. The surface texture can be controlled by changing the cross feed rate and feed speed per tooth and can be arranged on a straight line and an elliptic line. The patch size can change the angle of gradient on the array of cutter marks aligned along the straight line when the phase difference is constant. From the results of experiment and simulation, it is found that the regular geometric pattern can be generated by the proposed method.
