Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate surgical procedures in the parotid area of 28 patients with 26 benign parotid tumors and 2 parapharyngeal benign tumors to identify the stem of the great auricular nerve, and then to expose and preserve the nerve and its branch, the lobular branch (LB). We also examined our hypothesis that the great auricular nerve exists under “the great auricular nerve-running line” from a crossing of the posterior margin of the sternocleidomastoideus and external jugular vein to a median point between the mastoid tip and submandibular angle. The results indicated that the great auricular nerve was identified under the line in 27 of 28 cases and that the LB was preserved in all 28 cases. Our procedures may be effective and convenient for identifying the great auricular nerve and preserving the LB.
