Abstract

We report the functional and oncologic results of segmental/hemi mandibulectomy without flap reconstruction for T4a lower gingival cancer in patients who were thought not to be fit for reconstructive surgery due to poor systemic conditions.
Subjects/methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 7 patients who had been treated for T4a lower gingival cancer by segmental/hemi mandibulectomy without reconstruction between 2009 and 2014.
Results: Neck dissection was performed for 4 patients, and tracheostomy for all 7 patients. The median operation time was 157 minutes and the median blood loss was 220g. Observed wound complications included oro-cutaneous fistula in one patient and cervical infection in another patient. No systemic complications were observed. All patients regained oral intake.
Conclusion: Segmental/hemi mandibulectomy without reconstruction is a curative and less invasive treatment, which can be a reasonable treatment option for patients with poor conditions.
