Description

In the present report, we described and discussed our difinition, classification, etiology and surgical managements of adhesive otitis media. Adhesive otitis media was classified into three types ; the total adhesive type, the posterosuperior adhesive type and the fibrous adhesive type. Surgical managements consisted of "canal wall-down mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty with cavity obliteration with bone" for the total adhesive type and "canal wall-up mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty" for the posterosuperior adhesive type have been employed in this series. For prevention of re-adhesion of the drum to the promontrium, lyophilized homograf t dura and hydroxyapatite ossicular prosthesis were used. In canal wall-up technique, postoperative hearing result was successful in 81.5% and the new tympanic membrane was nearly normalized in 72.7%. In canal wall-down technique postoperative hearing result was successful in 65.1%.
