Description

OBJECTIVE: Pain control is important in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We investigated the effects of pain control on disease activity control and activities of daily living (ADL).

METHODS: The relationships between the modified Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (mHAQ), simplified disease activity index (SDAI), Sharp/van der Heijde score, patients' age, and pain visual analogue scale (PS-VAS) score were evaluated using both univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. This analysis was performed at baseline and then annually in 372 patients who were followed up for more than 3 years.

RESULTS: PS-VAS score showed a significant correlation with mHAQ at every annual assessment. PS-VAS score also demonstrated a significant correlation with SDAI.

CONCLUSION: These results suggested that pain control is key to improving both ADL and disease activity control. PS-VAS score is an important index for RA disease status evaluation.
