Part-time work has been a popular activity among students in Japan. This study investigates college students' choice of jobs in their part-time work, which influences their commitment in the workplace and job-search goal setting. The results of a survey, with a sample of 123 undergraduate students in Japanese national universities, revealed that students with positive core self-evaluation were more likely to engage in jobs with high levels of skill variety in their part-time work. It was also found that high levels of skill variety and job autonomy in parttime work lead to stronger commitment in the workplace, which in turn leads to setting higher goals for future job search. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
