Abstract
Microbial removal of cadmium from a homogenate of hepatopancreas, a waste tissue of scallop processing, was examined to use this waste for value-added protein resource. Hepatopancreas tissues were digested (solubilized) using various proteases for 4 h by shaking at 50°C. The yield of solubilization of the organ in the protease (Sumitim FP) treatment was 83%. During cultivation of the strain Xanthomonas sp. UR No. 2 in the homogenate of hepatopancreas digested by the proteases by the name of Protin PC 10 and alcalase, 93% of cadmium was separated. This organism is effective for separation of cadmium from the protease-treated homogenate of hepatopancreas. A good result was also obtained through a jar experiment of cadmium separation. The mechanism of cadmium sorption to UR No. 2 strain cells was also discussed. The crude proteins contents of the culture supernatant treated by Xanthomonas sp. UR No. 2 were equivalent to those of various feedstuffs on the market.
