Description

The efficiency of Hyper Thermal Biological Hydrolysis (HTBH) at 80°C on the organic fraction of municipal solid waste mixed with thermal anaerobic digestion sludge was investigated in 100-L batch reactors. The hydrolysis effect lasted only for one day with HTBH prior to methanogenesis (pre-HTBH) and for two days with HTBE after methanogenesis (post-HTBH). For both configurations, methane production at methanogenesis dropped if treated by HTBE for more than one day. In the HTBH reactors, gaseous ammonia, which inhibits microbial activity in high concentrations, was retrieved effectively with a gas stripping system. Microbial distribution analysis on the HTBH reactors indicated the dependency of microbial distributions on the configuration of the HTBH reactor. Carbohydrate/lactic acid-degrading microbes dominated in the pre-HTBH reactor, while protein degrading microbes dominated in the post-HTBH reactor.
