Abstract

Purpose: Many temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients visit to Prosthodontic specialists. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the diagnosis and the ordinal management for TMD patients.
Diagnosis for TMD: RDC/TMD is famous in the world and we usually use the classification of Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint.
Prevalence of TMD: Many people have TMD signs and symptoms, and some signs and symptoms may disappear without management. We need to consider spontaneous recovery in the management.
Ordinal management: We can select NSAIDs, home therapy, diet control, appliance therapy, occlusal treatment, physical therapy, spray & stretch, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, trigger-point injections, joint injections or arthrocentesis.
Teeth contacting habit: Many TMD patients have teeth clenching or teeth contacting habit (TCH). In this case, the patients may clench teeth when they have psychological concentration or stress. The teeth clenching induces loading to the temporomandibular joints or the masticatory muscles, and may provoke the pain. It is important the patients to cognize the TCH.
Conclusion: It is not difficult to manage the TMD patients and we can find the solution in the patient words.
