In this paper I review historical research on Japanese elections written since 1980 and discuss the agenda for future research. Historical research on elections can be classified into two fields, the history of electoral institutions and the history of the electoral process. Of the two fields, the latter is less developed because of insufficient data collection. Because the study of electoral processes is a necessary component of political history, the collection of basic electoral data should be the first priority for future research. Our next priority should be the collection of diaries and published materials which convey the context and circumstances of each election. Finally, we must develop a general theoretical framework for analysis. We cannot be satisfied with a history that satisfies itself with the simple recounting of facts known through direct experience.
