説明

We calculated the doubling time (DT), which is an indicator of tumor growth, by serial mammography in 17 patients with breast cancer. In addition, the relationships between the DT and the clinical factors in these patients as well as the time interval for reexamination of the breast tumor were evaluated on the basis of the DT.
The results were as follows:
1) Serial mammography revealed that the DT of breast cancer varies from 29 days to 371 days, with a mean of 5.8 months.
2) Differences in DT were associated with the histological type and axillary lymph node metastasis, but were independent of the age of the patient or the diameter of the tumor.
3) It was found that 5.9% of breast cancers measuring 1cm in diameter have the potential to develop to more than 2cm in diameter three months later. At six months, this figure rises to 23.5%, and at one year, it is 41.2%.
On this basis, we concluded that the interval for self-examination for breast cancer should be every one month. When there is some unusual finding, reexamination should be within three months.
