Abstract
The uniaxial compression test on core sample, the measurement of ultrasonic wave velocities through core sample and the observation of core sample have commonly used to estimate the strength of rock with the reference of previously obtained data. However the uniaxial compression test on intact sample without cracks and the subjective observation lead to the incorrect estimation of in-situ strength of rock. The conventional in-situ tensile and shear tests need a large amount of cost and time, which limits the number of these tests.<br>In this paper a new and simple in-situ tensile test on rock in bore hole is proposed to overcome the above problems and proved to be valid by some test data.
