Abstract
Thoracoscopic resection of a schwannoma of the chest wall was successfully performed in a 60-year-old man. A mass lesion was noted on a chestroentgenogram during a screening examination. The patient was followed up by regular scanning (chest X-ray and CT) for about one year, during which time no change in the lesion was observed. Based on the findings of the images and the clinical course, the mass lesion was suspected of being either benign mesothelioma or neurogenic tumor. On operation, on about 3.0×3.0cm soft white tumor with a smooth surface was easily thoracoscopically observed in the fourth intercostal subpleural space, and the tumor was successfully excised using both blunt and sharp endoscopic instruments. We conclude that the benign chest wall tumor is a possible candidate for thoracoscopic resection, which permits early diagnosis and treatment. In this case the benign schwannoma was able to be resected with ease using a thoracoscopic procedure. Carefully selected patients will get a great benfit from the minimally invasive surgery.
