Factors that Make much more Effective Experience Activities of Rice Farming in Elementary School

This study examined to verify whether children had changed their thinking and behavior that made the experience agricultural activities deepen their understanding of agriculture, and foster a feeling of gratitude to the food, and to clarify what factors affect children understanding of agriculture etc. In Study 1, the subjects were 56 fifth grade students who had experienced rice farming activities. Fifty-five of those students answered a question about what they learned from their first rice farming experience and 112 reaction items were collected. Forty-two students answered a question about how rice farming activities changed them and 54 reaction items were collected. It was suggested that children had a better understanding of agriculture and they had changed their thinking and behavior fostering a feeling of gratitude to the food through experience activities of rice farming. In Study 2, subjects of number of valid responses were 542 fifth grade students and 27 teachers. Surveys inquiring about the understanding of agriculture and feeling of gratitude to food created in Study 1 were distributed twice, spring and autumn. It was suggested that children who had no experience of rice farming in kindergarten or nursery school, fostered understanding of the very of the rice growing and feeling of gratitude to the food through rice farming.
