Description
Recently, in Japan, there is a growing expectation that elderly parents are supported by their own daughter in place of their daughter-in-law. It is commented that caring for their parents by daughter is a purely voluntary choice related with their emotional relationship. However, there has not been sufficient verification to make clear various factors. The purpose of this study is to examine the motivators and inhibitors of attitudes of filial responsibility toward aging parents, including structural effects. In addition, in order to clarify the characteristics of daughters' attitudes, this study also analyzes the factors affecting sons' attitudes, and considers the differences between sons' and daughters' attitudes. The participants of the survey are people in their twenties. Dependent variables are economic support intention and nursing support intention for the elderly parents. Independent variables are sibling structure, educational background, economic situation of parents and life-course expectation as structural factors, in addition to emotional closeness. The analysis revealed that daughters' filial responsibility is not simply the product of 'emotional closeness' but that the degree of filial responsibility is also explained by the factors of social structure such as traditional norms and sexual division of labor.
