Description

In this study, I examine how parents' attitudes, living arrangements, parents' resources, and young adults' resources are associated with the levels of adult children's independence in Korea.A model that includes these factors is tested using 2004 data collected from Korean premarital young adults in their 20s and 30s. The results of this study are as follows : First, for both males and females, living arrangements such as not living with parents is associated with higher levels of financial and living independence. It was also found that a closer relationship between young men and their fathers, and fathers' attitudes toward their daughters' finances are associated with higher levels of their emotional independence. Second, for the associations among three types of independence, financial independence is correlated with son's emotional and living independence. In case of females, all types of independence are significantly correlated with each other.
